NWCA & the FCA Team Up to Launch a Joint Leadership Academy

4/2/2012 12:51:43 PM

The NWCA and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Wrestling Ministry – FCAW) are proud to announce that the Second Annual CEO Leadership Academy will take place on May 29-31 at the Jon Davis Wrestling Center in Edwardsville, Illinois.   We are excited to announce that a minimum of 25 head and assistant college coaches along with some individuals who aspire to coach at faith-based colleges will receive full scholarships to attend the workshop.

The scholarships will be provided by two incredibly generous sponsors: former Harvard wrestler, Anthony Cimmarrusti, and Men of Iron, a faith based non-profit organization specializing in mentoring that is based in Manheim, Pa.   The scholarships will cover transportation, meals, lodging, and tuition for all participants.

This funding was provided by people who firmly believe in the influence of the coach who “coaches” with biblical principles, said FCAW executive Director, Carl Perry.

The development of this co-hosted event is in response to the 19 new intercollegiate wrestling teams that have been established at faith-based schools over in the past two years.  Numerous other athletic administrations have expressed interest in starting programs for the 2012-13 season.  “One of our greatest challenges right now is accelerating the development of solid mentor-coaches to ensure the success of these new programs.  The NWCA-FCA Leadership Academy is the perfect solution,” said NWCA President Brian Smith.

This Academy Workshop represents a collaborative effort between the NWCA and FCAW.  Nationally renowned coaching development expert, Dr. Dan Gould of Michigan State University, is the primary architect of the NWCA CEO Leadership Academy.  He will deliver the CEO training program for the coaches while Carl Perry, the new FCA National Director for wrestling, will oversee the delivery of the faith-based component of the curriculum.

The joint NWCA-FCAW Leadership Academy is part of a much larger NWCA coaching development initiative.    Since 2009, the NWCA has provided full scholarships to over 150 head and assistant college coaches who have completed the basic CEO Leadership Academy components.  These components are designed to strengthen the coach’s CEO skills as well as to promote best practices for maintaining a strong alignment between our collegiate wrestling programs and the greater educational mission of each school.   Last year, the “faith-based” component was added so scholarships can be extended to an additional 25 - 30 coaches each year.   To learn more about the NWCA Coaching Leadership Academy visit http://www.nwcaonline.com/NWCAWebSite/coachingdevelopment/leadership.aspx .
