The small luncheon at the Tower Club in Tyson’s has Coach Cael Sanderson speaking. Cael is coach of 2X Team Champion Penn State and was a 4X Undefeated NCAA Champion and Olympic Champion. The opportunity to spend time in this close environment is special for all who attend.

The cabinet reviewed a proposal to change the team component of the Division I Wrestling Championships to a dual-match format. During a lengthy discussion, cabinet members expressed both cautious optimism for the proposal and concerns that the concept may not have been fully developed with Division I coaches (based on feedback cabinet members received before the meeting). In addition, the cabinet acknowledged challenges related to considering budget requests in the middle of a budget cycle.

On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors, we want to provide you with a status report on an NCAA DI National Duals proposal that is going before the NCAA Championship Cabinet for a vote on September 11. If it passes there, it must still make it through the Presidents Council in November. I’m guessing that many of you have heard bits and pieces of this because it has been quite controversial among our DI wrestling coaches and extended community.

At the recent NWCA Convention in Fort Lauderdale, there was a lot of buzz coming into the event about the new Best of Brand awards. With nearly 100 teams participating in the competition, seven teams emerged as winners in the award program that was designed to honor NCAA wrestling programs for their investment in marketing. “The goal was to provide coaches with an incentive to market their programs throughout the year. By honoring them in this manner, we hope that coaches will continue to see the importance of strengthening their brand in the surrounding community” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association Meritorious Service Award is given to individuals that have made outstanding contributions in supporting and promoting the sport of amateur wrestling. This year at the NWCA Convention, in front of over 200 wrestling coaches, this award was given to National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Executive Director Jim Giunta.
