BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University Director of Athletics David Hicks announced the hire of Deral Brown as head men’s wrestling coach. Brown is no stranger to wrestling in the southeast as he wrestled and was an assistant coach at Newberry College.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join the King Athletics Department and excited about writing the next chapter in King wrestling history, together, with the guys on the team and the entire King University wrestling staff.”
Deral (pronounced Duh-RELL) Brown spent last season as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Newberry, helping led the Wolves to a South Atlantic Conference Carolinas championship with a 6-0 league record. The Wolves went 12-3 in duals and sent seven wrestlers to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships with three earning All-America honors.
“Deral brings a student-centered focus to King that aligns perfectly with our mission,” Hicks said. “He is committed to developing student-athletes and leaders and servants, as well as champions. He brings a wealth of experience from successful programs and was an All-American himself. He understands that success is not just something achieved on the mat, but in the classroom, on campus, and in life.”
Prior to Newberry, Brown served as an assistant coach at SUNY Cortland in Cortland, N.Y. from 2016-18. In that time he helped the Red Dragons finish seventh in the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships. Over the last three years, Brown has coached 17 national qualifiers, six All-America honorees, two national finalists, and one national champion. He has also mentored 12 student-athletes that have garnered academic All-America honors.
In his career at Newberry, Brown was a two-time national qualifier, earning All-America honors in 2013 when he finished fourth. He is tied for the most wins all-time at Newberry with 143 and is the all-time leader with major decisions. While at Newberry he also attended the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Leadership Academy.
Following graduation, Brown served as the head coach at Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, S.C. form 2014-16. While there he was named South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) Coach of the year for the 2015-16 season after winning a state championship.
Brown earned his degree from Newberry in 2013 and a Master’s degree in sports management from SUNY Cortland in 2018.
