NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Names Regional Wrestlers of the Year​

FAYETTE, Iowa (May 2) – Two seniors, a junior and a freshman have been selected as the NCAA Division II Regional Wrestlers of the Year presented by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.

The four NCAA Division II Regional Wrestlers of the Year include 165-pound freshman Isaiah White from Notre Dame College for NCAA Super Region One, 174-pound junior Nick Becker from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for Super Region Two, 141-pound senior Nate Rodriguez from Maryville University for Super Region Three and 197-pound senior Jacob Waste from California Baptist University for Super Region Four. All four earned titles at their respective NCAA Division II Super Regionals and the National Championships in Birmingham, Ala. in early March.

The NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association will name the 2017 NCAA Division II Wrestler of the Year on Friday, May 5. The recipient will be the tenth selection in the award’s history.

ISAIAH WHITE – FR – OAK PARK, ILL. – SUPER REGION ONE – NOTRE DAME COLLEGE
As a freshman at Notre Dame College, Isaiah White competed at 165 pounds finishing with a 28-2 record. White ultimately earned the NCAA Division II title leading the Falcons to the NCAA Division II and Super Region One Championships.  As the No. 3 seed in the Super Regional, White cruised through the competition posting three major decisions including in the championship match. At the National Championships, White won all of his matches by at least seven points. The Oak Park, Ill. native went 7-0 in duals this season scoring 31 team points.

NICK BECKER – R-JR – HARTFORD, WIS. – SUPER REGION TWO – UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE

Wisconsin-Parkside junior Nick Becker capped his perfect 25-0 season by winning his second consecutive NCAA Division II title at 174 pounds. Becker defeated UNC Pembroke’s Blaze Shade in both the super region and national championship finals. Prior to his finals match with Shade, Becker earned two technical falls at the national championships. The Hartford, Wis. product is currently riding a 66-match winning streak. Becker was named the 2016-17 Great Lakes Valley Conference Wrestler of the Year.

NATE RODRIGUEZ – SR – NEOSHO, MO. – SUPER REGION THREE – MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY
Nate Rodriguez closed out his outstanding collegiate run with the NCAA Division II title at 141 pounds. The senior went 32-2 this year and 108-16 in his four years in college; two with Maryville and two with Ouachita Baptist. Rodriguez took care of his unfinished business from the 2015-16 campaign by not only claiming his second straight super regional title, but bouncing back from an injury that took him out of the national championship picture. The three-time NCAA All-American (2017-1st, 2015-3rd at OBU, 2014-7th at OBU) and four-time NWCA Academic All-American spent the last two seasons ranked No. 1 in the nation at 141 pounds.

JACOB WASTE – R-SR – APPLE VALLEY, MINN. – SUPER REGION FOUR – CALIFORNIA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY
Jacob Waste will leave the Cal Baptist wrestling program as the most decorated wrestler in their NCAA DII era. Waste earned three All-American awards, including a 197-pound NCAA Division II title this year, a third-place finish as a junior (184) and a fifth-place finish as a sophomore (184). After transferring from Buffalo, Waste claimed three regional and RMAC championships. The Apple Valley, Minn. native ranks third in career wins at CBU (78) and first in career winning percentage (88.6%). His major decision victory in the national championship finals catapulted the Lancers from fourth to third place in the final standings.
