The National Wrestling Coaches Association is pleased to announce Joey Martinez of Menlo College was named the Theraworx NWCA Coach of the Year award for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The award is presented to the coach that has demonstrated outstanding effort throughout the season in developing and elevating their program on campus and in the community.

The award is sponsored by the NWCA in conjunction with their partner, Theraworx.

Theraworx Protect is a topical formulation that optimizes and preserves the skin’s natural antimicrobial function.
Coach Martinez won the award over a strong group of finalists that included:

  • Thomas Pompei – Indiana Institute of Technology
  • Chris Fleeger – University of the Cumberlands
  • Dana Vote – Midland University
  • Todd Allen – Williams Baptist College
  • Nick Mitchell – Grand View University
  • Jeff Bedard – Reinhardt University
  • Larry Nugent – Bethany College

Coach Martinez led his wrestlers to a 7-4 dual meet record and a first-place finish at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships. Being an outstanding leader, Martinez puts academics at the top of his list. Ten of his wrestlers were named to the Cascade Conference All-Academic Team. One of his wrestlers, Joseph Jauregi received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar award. This award is given to one athlete through all divisions, DI, DII, DIII, and NAIA for excellence in the classroom and in the field.

Coach Martinez led his team through a variety of community service outreach programs. This year his team participated in a fitness challenge partnering with Dethrone Gym to help raise money for LifeMoves, a non-profit organization who helps displaced and homeless individuals. His team solicited donations based on the miles ridden on bikes. Over $2,000 was raised by the Menlo College Wrestling Team.

Over the past couple of years, the Menlo College Wrestling Team has participated in a Holiday Toy Drive and an annual Red Cross Blood Drive. The Holiday Toy Drive that Martinez’s team participated in helped raise over $1,000 worth of toys that went towards the community kids that may not receive gifts that year. For the Red Cross Blood Drive, wrestlers either gave blood, or helped with the organization and check-in for the event.

He also implemented a character course called, Wednesday Wisdoms. Wednesday Wisdoms was a forty-five-minute presentation where the team developed both performance and moral character skills and went over wrestling topics for the upcoming season.

Mike Moyer, Executive Director of the NWCA stated, “On behalf of the NWCA and our President, Tom Ryan, I want to congratulate Coach Martinez for his extraordinary accomplishments this year.”
Coach Martinez was presented with his award prior to the NAIA National Wrestling Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday March 1, 2018.
