Seeking to expand recruiting options for student-athletes, Ouachita Baptist University's Board of Trustees has voted to add two new NCAA Division II athletic teams – men's wrestling and women's golf. The additional programs will bring the total number of athletic teams at Ouachita to 16.

Wrestling and men’s and women’s swimming and diving will be the newest additions to the growing Lake Erie College Department of Athletics. The programs, set to debut during the 2010-11 academic year, bring the total of NCAA Division II-sponsored sport offerings at the College to 23.

The first NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll for the 2009-2010 season has been released. Reigning NCAA Team Champion Iowa was the unanimous choice for the top spot in the rankings. Overall eight conferences have teams represented in the Top 25 and five conferences have teams in the Top 10.

Shorter College President Dr. Harold E. Newman and Director of Athletics Bill Peterson announced Monday plans to begin an intercollegiate wrestling program. The team will begin competition in the Fall of 2010.

Wayland Baptist University a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference and a Division I member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), has announced today, October 13, 2009, that they are starting the first two collegiate wrestling teams in the state of Texas.

The inaugural NWCA Leadership Academy kicked off the 2009 Convention with tremendous momentum. Twenty nine young, aspiring college coaches and twenty four mentors (seasoned veteran coaches, administrators, and business leaders) gathered for a one day workshop, which was led by internationally renowned coaching development expert, Dr. Dan Gould of Michigan State University.

The NWCA is excited to announce it has secured a $30,000 grant that can be utilized to scholarship “up-and-coming” college coaches who have been nominated by their peers to participate in a “one of a kind” Coaches Leadership Academy “focus group” in conjunction with this year’s NWCA Convention in Ft. Lauderdale. To a large extent, the future success of college wrestling lies in the hands of these aspiring young coaches.

As part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of heat-related athletic injuries in secondary schools, today at its 60th annual meeting and clinical symposia at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) released an inter-association task force consensus statement which includes comprehensive recommendations on heat-acclimatization guidelines for secondary school athletics programs. The statement appears in the June 2009 issue of the Journal of Athletic Training, NATA’s scientific publication.

Eight Division I wrestling programs are recognized for having the highest Academic Progress Rate in their conference for the second straight year. The NCAA released its 5th annual APR report earlier this week and wrestling showed vast improvements with 21 teams improving by 15 or more points from last year.

Division I wrestling programs throughout the country received higher marks than ever before in the 5th annual APR report released by the NCAA yesterday. The overall four-year Academic Progress Rate in Division I wrestling improved seven points, more than double the three point gain by all Division I athletic teams.

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association released a set of recommendations for precautions that should be followed by parents, coaches, athletic trainers, other health care professionals and participants in secondary school athletics, in order to prevent the spread of communicable and infectious diseases

Team sports are a great way for kids to improve physical fitness, coordination and self-discipline. Unfortunately, they can also result in injuries such as sore shoulders, swollen knees and other ailments that, if not taken seriously, can become chronic later in life.
