For the fifth straight year, high school boys wrestling participation numbers have increased while girls’ participation hit an all-time high as The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) released their 2008-09 participation numbers. High School boys’ wrestling remains the sixth most popular sport with 267,378 participants.

When Northern Iowa athletic director Troy Dannen announced he was cutting the school's baseball team to save money, he didn't sugarcoat his reasoning. "From a proportionality standpoint, we're really not even close," said Dannen, citing the school's male-to-female athlete ratio. "We weren't going to look at a women's program, we had to look at the men's side of it."

Yesterday we celebrated the 37th anniversary of the adoption of Title IX. As I worked on a timeline detailing the history of the legislation, I was struck by how recent the struggle for equality has been.

A class-action lawsuit against the University of California Davis, over women’s participation in varsity sports has been settled, the university announced Wednesday.

The University of the Cumberlands Men’s Wrestling program is one that continues to excel to the top of the collegiate rankings over the past few years. Now the Patriots have their opportunity to grab another accomplishment on their way. The Mid-South Conference has officially made Men’s Wrestling its newest conference sport.

NWCA’s Proposed Solution - The NWCA Board of Directors has been very aggressive in three primary areas that we believe will have the greatest impact on saving and/or growing wrestling at all levels: coaching development, student-athlete welfare, transitioning wrestling to a more media friendly sport.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association’s mission is to preserve, promote and protect college wrestling programs in all collegiate divisions. In recent months, there have been eight intercollegiate programs that have been discontinued after the 2008-09 season, thus eliminating opportunities for young men to participate at these institutions or even to finish their collegiate careers. Leaving a puzzle that needs to be solved, and asking the wrestling community what else can be done to save wrestling?

Norwich University has decided to eliminate their varsity wrestling program at the end of this year. This is the second dropped wrestling program in the past week (Lawrence University has also dropped…we are working on contacting their coach for more information). With the current state of the economy, we can be assured that more carnage is on its way for All Olympic sports if we don’t mount a very aggressive “public relations” campaign immediately.
