10/23/2009 1:27:32 PM

Daniel Island, S.C. – Members of The Citadel golf, tennis, track and field and wrestling teams, as well as members of the Athletics Department administration were among over 8,200 people who supported breast cancer research by participating in the 2009 Lowcountry Race for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 17 on Daniel Island.

The Bulldogs were well represented as they earned the Largest Collegiate Team Award for having the most collegiate participants register for the race.

Many survivors, who wore pink at the event, gathered on stage throughout the day, making an emotional stand against the disease that tried to take them. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. Around 40,000 women will die from breast cancer each year.

A total of 75% of the money or proceeds raised will stay here in the lowcountry and go to breast cancer testing. The remaining amount will go to the national foundation for breast cancer research. The Komen Foundation, who held the race, raised more than $290,000, up from last years amount of $275,000 in pledges and from sponsors.
