MEN'S WRESTLING CATCHES, DONATES FISH TO ST. ANTHONY'S

11/6/2009 2:13:04 PM

ATHERTON, Calif. - The Menlo College men's wrestling team carried on its tradition of giving when it caught and donated fish for the third year in a row as a symbolic start to its season in late September.

Upon returning from the fishing trip, the Oaks grapplers donated their entire catch - approximately 90 fish - to St. Anthony's Church in Redwood City, Calif. The St. Anthony's Padua Dining Room has been in operation since 1974 and serves as many as 600 hot meals a day, six days a week throughout the year. It has been the recipient of the men's wrestling team's bounty three years in a row.

The Oaks took to the seas on Emeryville Sportfishing's 56-foot Superfish thanks to the sponsorship of Anthony Cunha, the father of one current and one former Oaks wrestler. Cunha sponsors the event each year in memory of his own father. Among the fish caught by the Oaks were halibut, ling cod, rock cod, and sea snapper.

Though it does its best to give all year long, Menlo's men's wrestling squad begins its competitive season in early November. In eight years of existence, the Oaks have produced six NAIA National Champions, 34 All-Americans, and seven Academic All-Americans.
