Developing Sports Team Leaders Graduate Course

 

 

Goal of the Course:

• Align sport with the educational mission and values

 

• Make the coach's role in leadership development intentional, not incidental. Help coaches create an environment where leaders grow

 

• Establish "leadership-goals" to guide actions of leader-athletes and mentoring of coaches

 

What you will accomplish in the course:

Create your own compelling team mission statement

 

Establish leadership goals that advance the team mission and that can be accomplished by all student-athletes

 

Learn about quality leadership tools that can be used by your student-athletes to strengthen team motivation, athletic development and team work.

 

Construct a mentoring plan that details what you will do to bring the leader out of every student-athlete on your team, from freshman to senior.

 

Develop a school-approved plan to deal with serious team issues that provides the best available help to the student-athletes who need it the most

 

 

 

Who should take this course: The course is targeted for coaches of all levels who wish to prioritize leadership development on their team. Graduates of this course have included college and high school coaches as well as Olympians, teachers, lawyers, business leaders and administrators. In many instances, this course will satisfy “state mandated” continuing education requirements for teacher certification. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive one college graduate credit.

 

Three Credit Option: For those coaches who are interested, you can receive an additional two college graduate credits by participating in an implementation phase.  Upon completion of the one credit course, you can work with Professor Tom Kane to implement your newly created “leadership plan.” This option will cost $795.

 

Class Dates for the Fall of 2007: September 2007 & October 2007

 

Price of Class: $265.00, counts for 1 college credit
