Laurinburg, NC – The St. Andrews University Athletics Department has added two more competitive sports.  The Knights will be bringing Women’s Wrestling and Women’s Beach Volleyball to Laurinburg.

According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, there are 70+ colleges that now sponsor a varsity wrestling program.  The number of women wrestling in high school has gone from 804 in 1994 to 21,124 as of 2019.

Head Coach of the new Women’s Wrestling team, Nick Soto, shared his enthusiasm about the new sport coming to St. Andrews:

“We are extremely excited about the start of our women’s wrestling program. It’s great to see more and more women competing in the sport and we are grateful to be able to provide an opportunity where these student-athletes can earn a quality education and compete at a high level. Laurinburg is a great place with a tight-knit, friendly community and we’re eager to get going!”

Additionally, the American Volleyball Coaches Association says there were 126 college beach volleyball teams with 13 of them competing in the NAIA as of 2018-19.

Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach, Tessa Smith, will be the new Head Coach of the St. Andrews Women’s Beach Volleyball team.  She shared her thoughts on the new sport coming to St. Andrews:

“We are so excited to bring beach volleyball to St. Andrews. The sport grows every year at the collegiate level and gives more opportunities for women to compete. It is one of the fastest-growing sports in college athletics, and as an alumna, I cannot wait to be a part of building such an amazing program at a place near and dear to my heart.”

Athletic Director Elizabeth Burris said, “this is really good for our institution and something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.” These are the third and fourth sports that have been added to St. Andrews athletics in the last two years.
