Course
Description
Developing Sport Team Leaders, constructed in
collaboration with the National Wrestling Coaches Association, helps a
nationwide audience of coaches improve the on-team leadership skills of their
student-athletes. Throughout this
course, coaches learn to merge best
motivational and leadership practices into their own coaching philosophy so
that they can become primary mentors of leadership development in their
respective school systems. Coaches
develop a leadership lesson plan to foster on-team leadership as a
dominant part of the team culture. The
lesson plan will be thorough and will include a clear and compelling team
mission statement, a specific description of team leadership roles and goals,
strategies that team leader-athletes can use while they lead, and guidance for leader-athletes
who confront serious team issues.
Course principles are delivered through a mix of
audio presentations, interactive exercises, and structured discussions among
coaches. That means that coaches who
enroll in this course should be prepared to interact frequently with other
coaches! On the class <Discussion
Board> coaches share ideas about how to best integrate course materials into
their coaching practices.
Learning about sport assists athletes throughout
their sport careers; however, learning about leadership will help athletes for a
lifetime.
·
Class participation: 30 pts. Participation constitutes 40% of your final
grade. The participation grade is linked
to the discussion board questions and handing in all assignments on time. Late work leads to a point deduction from the
class participation grade at the instructor’s discretion. With respect to attendance, the student is responsible for gaining access to all online
resources and materials. Should a
student experience difficulty accessing any course materials, then it is that
student’s responsibility to contact the help desk or the instructor immediately
so that the problem can be addressed.

Assignments
Complete instructions for
all course assignments are made available at the course-site. Coaches complete
one assignment per week and have the responsibility for completing the
assignment by the due-date appearing on the time-line
(available on-line). Coaches e-mail me completed
assignments for feedback. The instructor
provides detailed feedback that is consistent with the model of leadership that
is presented in the class. The
instructor will provide another cycle of feedback when the coach hands in their
Final Leadership Development Plan.
At the end of the course
coaches submit their Final Leadership
Development Plan. This project is
the compilation of Assignments 1 though 4—with consideration given to the
feedback provided by the instructor.
Coaches should carefully read the course timeline, which informs them
when each assignment is due.
