Urenda Named Otero Junior College Head Wresting Coach

La Junta, CO – Otero Junior College has announced that Tim Urenda, from Pueblo will be the new head coach for the college’s wrestling program, beginning May 1. Urenda has experience coaching, as well as wrestling at the collegiate level.
Over his three-year course at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kan., Urenda has helped qualify 15 wrestlers to the national tournament. Of those 15 wrestlers, Urenda alongside Head Coach Nick Nothern, were able to obtain their first All-American in the 2018-19 season.
Urenda graduated with an Exercise Science degree from Colorado State University-Pueblo, where he wrestled for head coach, Dax Charles. While at CSU-Pueblo, Urenda was a 4-year starter for the Thunder Wolves, racking up 74 career wins, earning RMAC Wrestler of the Week honors twice and becoming a three-time Academic All-American. In his last two years, Urenda was named to the NWCA All-Academic team. In addition, Urenda holds a total of 74 career wins, which puts him top 10 in CSU-Pueblo program history.
Prior to wrestling at the NCAA Division II level, Urenda attended Pueblo South High School, where he wrestled for Jerry Sisneros. Urenda qualified for the State tournament all four years of high school. He took 1st place his junior year and was State Runner-Up his senior year. Furthermore, Urenda managed to win 141 matches which was the second most in Pueblo history.
“We are so excited to have Coach Urenda join the OJC coaching staff,” OJC Athletic Director, Gary Addington, said. “He has proven himself as a wrestler and a coach, and his academic achievements show he will push our team to be the best on the mat as well as in the classroom. He is well-connected in the wrestling world, and as a Pueblo native he knows our area well. We can’t wait to see what the Rattler Wrestling program will be able to achieve under Coach Urenda’s leadership.”
