Overview
The NWCA, through a collaborative effort with internationally renowned coaching development expert, Dr. Dan Gould at Michigan State University, has constructed a gold standard leadership program for coaches of women’s collegiate programs. This academy whelp college coaches accomplish the following: Strengthen their CEO skills, strengthen the alignment of wrestling programs with educational values, develop best practices for working with women programs and insulate their programs from being discontinued.
ACADEMY DETAILS
Participating coaches have the opportunity to sharpen their CEO skills by completing the following aspects of the Academy:Complete ten (2 hour) online modules that promote important CEO principles
Complete a “program assessment survey” to identify specific aspects of a college team that may result in the program being vulnerable to being discontinued.
Complete a 360 evaluation in an effort to understand how administrators, wrestlers, alumni, and parents view the coach’s proficiency in various areas.
Attend a 2 day Academy workshop where a facilitator conducts small group discussions with participating coaches and mentors to help Academy participants customize the general concepts learned in the online modules to meet their needs on their respective campuses.
Participate in a mentoring program whereby the coach can receive ongoing guidance from a season veteran coach and/or athletic administrator.
Assemble a portfolio to demonstrate that all key program areas are at or above an acceptable standard.
Turn in a completed workbook prior to the start of the academy to the assigned mentor.
Attend the NWCA Convention (Summer/Women Academy only).
HOW TO APPLY TO THE ACADEMY
The NWCA is currently accepting nominations (head and assistant coaches) for the Summer Traditional Academy, the Women's Specific Academy and the FCA Leadership Academy who MUST agree to the following items below:
- Must be an active coach and member of the NWCA
- Head College Coaches get first priority
- If accepted, must submit a $275 deposit that will be applied to the 2019 NWCA Convention
- Assistant Coaches will be accepted that come with strong recommendations and coaches desire to be a head college coach
- Accepted participants must attend all educational sessions of the 2018 Convention
- Club and High School Coaches who have career aspirations to be head college coaches may apply
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The NWCA, through the efforts of a few very generous donors, is able to provide full scholarships (airfare, lodging, meals, convention registration) for a pre-determined number of coaches per academy. To qualify for the full scholarship, the nominated coach MUST agree to all the program details.
You will be reimbursed your travel within 10 days of successfully completing the leadership academy. This would include completing all prerequisites and attending the leadership academy. For the summer academy, this would include attending all educational sessions of the convention. This is clearly outlined in the handbook.
To those who are currently completing the NWCA Coaching Leadership Academy, you should have a unique log in and password that would have been sent to you through Michigan State University. These codes would have been issued through MSU via email from an address listed: angel.Msu.edu.
