BROCKPORT, NY — SUNY Brockport Athletic Director Erick Hart announced the hiring of Caleb Garvey as the new head wrestling coach on Thursday. Garvey will be responsible for all aspects of Brockport’s nationally recognized wrestling program.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Caleb to the Brockport family. We’re excited to have a young man with his kind of experience in both wrestling and in the military,” said Hart. “He stood out as the perfect fit for our program throughout the hiring process and we fully expect him to hit the ground running and help continue to improve upon the past success of our nationally recognized wrestling program.”
Garvey spent the last three seasons as the assistant wrestling coach at Thiel College in Greenville, PA. During his time, he helped lead Thiel to a President’s Athletic Conference (PAC) Team Championship, 10 PAC Individual Champions, 12 National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-Americans and he also helped mentor a two-time National qualifier. He was also the recruiting coordinator and helped secure 49 recruits in just three classes, including 10 state medalists and 21 PA/OH/NY state qualifiers. He was also responsible for overseeing the academic progress of the program which held the highest grade point average in the athletic department.
“I’d like to thank Erick Hart and the hiring committee for giving me the opportunity to lead such a historic program,” said Garvey. “I could not be more excited to take the reins of this team and I’m ready to build on the tradition of success with Brockport wrestlers both on and off the mat.”
His responsibilities at Thiel also included advising the Thiel Student Athlete Advisory Committee and he has been a clinician at several local wrestling clubs including Titan, Johnsonburg, and Bad Karma WC.
He was a three-year starter on the wrestling team during his undergraduate days at Thiel where he helped the Tomcats receive three straight NWCA All-Academic awards.
He joined the United States Air Force in 2014 and he is currently a Logistics Readiness Officer in Coraopolis, PA. He served six years as a Security Forces (police) member prior to commissioning as an officer.
Garvey graduated from Thiel in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Garvey holds a master’s degree in education with a concentration in collegiate student affairs from Youngstown State University.
A Storied Winning Tradition
Garvey takes over the program from Bill Jacoutot who spent last season as the interim head coach. Last year, Jacoutot helped guide the Golden Eagles to a 4-1 dual meet record, a second-place finish at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships, a second place finish at the John Summa Invitational and an eighth place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regionals. He guided 125 pounder Matt Caccamise and 133 pounder Zach Levey to individual NCAA Championship appearances. Caccamise won the 125-pound weight class at regionals while Levey placed third to earn an automatic NCAA qualification.
Brockport’s storied wrestling tradition includes five NCAA team national championships, 27 individual national champions, and 147 All-Americans. Prior to Coach Jacoutot, Brockport Head Coach Don Murray led the program for 51 straight seasons, and he was the longest active tenured coach in any sport in NCAA Division III.
