NWCA Announces January Winners of the NCAA Women’s Region Wrestler of the Month Awards
MANHEIM, PA – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced their women’s wrestling, Region Wrestlers of the Month, on Thursday. Zoe Nowicki of Adrian College, Emily Shilson of Augsburg University, Montana DeLawder of King University, and Alara Boyd of McKendree University were honored for their performances in January.
Nowicki was the Northeast Region’s Wrestler of the Month for the second straight month and is the first two-time wrestler of the month honoree. Ranked No .1 at 136 pounds, Nowicki went 5-0 in January to improve her record on the season to 19-0. Of those five wins, four came over ranked opponents, with three coming at the NWCA National Duals. At the duals, she earned a 17-6 technical fall win over fourth-ranked Sara Sulejmani of North Central College before back-to-back decisions over fifth-ranked Nina Makem of Augsburg and sixth-ranked Emmily Patneaud of McKendree. At the Adrian Open, Nowicki defeated seventh-ranked Athena Wilden of Lindenwood University.
Shilson was the Northwest Region’s Wrestler of the Month following a 9-0 month that included a pair of ranked wins. Shilson has been ranked No. 1 at 109 pounds all season and earned three wins by technical fall and two by pin in January. At the NWCA National Duals, Shilson pinned second-ranked Samara Chavez of King in 4:01 before pinning Lindenwood’s Valerlia Mamleeva in 1:08.
DeLawder was the Southeast Region’s Wrestler of the Month after helping the Tornado win their fifth NWCA National Duals title. The now top-ranked wrestler at 130 pounds took three wins at the event. Two of those wins came over ranked foes as she pinned third-ranked Asia Nguyen-Smith of North Central College in 4:20 in the semifinals. In the final, DeLawder defeated top-ranked Cameron Guerin of McKendree University on a 7-4 decision. DeLawder is now 16-1 on the season, having won her last 13 bouts.
Boyd was the Southwest Region’s Wrestler of the Month following a 6-0 month after dropping to 143 pounds. Following the switch and her big month, Boyd is now ranked first at 143 pounds in the latest poll. Boyd earned three wins over ranked opponents in January, helping McKendree to an NWCA National Duals runner-up finish. She earned a 10-0 technical fall win over eighth-ranked Kim Nunez of North Central before another 10-0 technical fall win over sixth-ranked Nia Miranda of Tiffin University. Boyd closed the weekend with a pin over sixth-ranked London Houston of King in 1:34.
All four are now eligible for NWCA National Wrestler of the Month, which will be announced on Monday, February 7.
