BUENA VISTA, VA.—Southern Virginia University Vice President and Athletics Director Deidra Dryden today announced the addition of women’s wrestling as an intercollegiate sponsored sport within the Knights athletics department beginning Winter 2023.

“We’re excited for the growth in women’s wrestling across the country and our recruiting areas,” said Dryden. “We look forward to the addition of dozens of female wrestlers who want to join our campus community to train and compete in a Latter-day Saint environment.

“We also welcome any wrestlers who want to attend this Fall 2022 or Spring 2023,” continued Dryden. “We will work to create opportunities for women’s wrestlers to practice during the 2022-23 academic year as we prepare for the official inaugural season in 2023.”

With this announcement, Southern Virginia University becomes the 23rd NCAA Division III institution—and fourth school in the Commonwealth of Virginia—to add women’s wrestling as an intercollegiate sponsored sport. Dryden will conduct a national search for a head women’s wrestling coach with the goal of making a quality hire in the coming months.

“First and foremost, we’re looking for the right champion and leader to start and develop this new program,” said Dryden. “When we find the right candidate, we will work to get that coach to campus as soon as possible to begin working with and developing wrestlers during this year in preparation for the program’s official launch next year.”

Established in 1996, Southern Virginia University is the only private, self-reliant, four-year residential university aligned with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day. With 28 varsity sports—after the addition of women’s wrestling next year—Southern Virginia University is home to more Latter-day Saint student-athletes than any other school in the country.
